Reliability & watch-outs
Known issues
- Early OM654 diesel: rocker arm / camshaft concerns
- AIRMATIC air suspension can leak at high mileage
- 9G-TRONIC: fluid changes recommended earlier than official intervals
- MBUX/electronics glitches (mostly fixed via updates)
- MK1: AWD/angle-gear fluid and timing belt (diesel) on interval
- MK1 T6 2.9: early 4-speed GM automatic
- MK2: infotainment software and 12V battery drain
- MK2 T8: ERAD and battery need monitoring
Pros
- 630 L boot growing to ~2,055 L — roomy for a large SUV
- GLE 450: 367 hp I6 with EQ Boost (48V) and 500 Nm
- OM656 2.9 I6 diesel (GLE 350 d: 272 hp / 600 Nm)
- GLE 400 e PHEV: 381 hp and 650 Nm, company-car friendly
- Genuine seven-seat practicality
- High safety (5-star Euro NCAP)
- Scandinavian design and comfortable ride
Cons
- OM654/OM656 diesel: AdBlue/DPF watch-points with lots of short trips
- PHEV shrinks boot space (~490 L)
- Complex air suspension and electronics need dealer maintenance
- Not focused on sharp dynamics
- MK1 dated infotainment and thirsty petrols
- Higher running costs (premium)

Volvo XC90
As a model line, the XC90 is a large, comfortable seven-seat SUV. The steering is light and the chassis filters out bumps calmly, making long family trips relaxed. The first generation feels more angular and the second more refined, but both stand for safety and comfort. Strong diesels and smooth mild-hybrids deliver easy performance, while the T8 plug-in hybrid is powerful and quiet. Expect no sporty edge, but safe, predictable and soothing progress.
