Production and platform

Second-generation Koleos, launched in 2016 as a mid-size SUV on the CMF-CD platform (shared with the Kadjar and related Nissan models). Available as a five-seater with front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. A facelift in 2019–2020 updated the exterior styling, revised the interior and introduced a 1.7 Blue dCi engine option in some markets. Production continued into the mid-2020s in various regions; a further evolution appeared later in some markets. Distinguished from the earlier first-generation Koleos by its larger dimensions, updated platform and diesel-focused European lineup.

Dimensions and practicality

Length approximately 4,672–4,673 mm; width around 1,843 mm (excluding mirrors); height around 1,673–1,678 mm; wheelbase 2,705 mm. Boot volume is about 458–579 litres (up to roughly 1,690–1,795 litres with seats folded). Fuel tank capacity is 60 litres. Ground clearance is around 190–210 mm. Rear passenger space is generous for the class, with good knee room and a high seating position for visibility. The cabin is practical with a large glass roof option on higher trims and one-touch folding rear seats. Suitable for families needing space and occasional light towing. Towing capacity is up to 2,000 kg (braked) on higher-output diesels.

Driving experience

A relaxed family cruiser rather than a dynamic driver's car, with good visibility. Comfortable and composed for a mid-size SUV, with a soft ride that prioritises long-distance refinement. Steering is light and accurate enough for the size but lacks strong feedback. Body control is adequate, though some examples feel soft over larger bumps. Diesels provide strong low-end torque for motorway use and overtaking. X-Tronic CVT automatics are smooth once under way but can feel sluggish or noisy under hard acceleration. AWD versions add traction in poor conditions but increase weight.

Transmission and drive

Front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive on the 2.0 dCi. A 6-speed manual or X-Tronic CVT, depending on engine. All European versions are Euro 6. The 2.0 dCi dominates the used market. (Petrol options were mainly for non-European markets.)

Common issues

  • 2.0 dCi (M9R): generally robust with chain-driven timing. EGR and DPF clogging possible with short-trip use; AdBlue system faults on later examples. Turbo issues on neglected cars.
  • 1.6 dCi (R9M): timing-chain wear or cover leaks on higher-mileage examples; EGR and DPF issues with urban use.
  • 1.7 Blue dCi: emissions system (DPF, AdBlue, NOx sensors) sensitive to short trips.
  • X-Tronic CVT: judder, slipping or hesitation on higher-mileage cars, especially with neglected fluid changes. Cooler-related contamination reported on some.
  • All-wheel-drive system: rear differential or transfer-case issues reported on some 2.0 dCi 4x4 examples at higher mileage (oil leaks, internal wear).
  • Suspension bushes, ball joints and control arms: wear at higher mileage (clunks over bumps).
  • R-Link multimedia freezes or connectivity issues on some examples.
Renault Koleos used-buyer checklist

What a buyer should check

  • Full service history, including regular oil changes and any AdBlue or emissions system work.
  • Cold-start engine noise and any power loss under load.
  • Transmission behaviour from cold and under load (smooth engagement on CVT).
  • All-wheel-drive system function and any dashboard warnings (especially on higher-mileage 4x4 cars).
  • DPF regeneration history on diesels.
  • Suspension noises and tyre wear.
  • Infotainment system responsiveness.
  • Confirmation that any software or technical campaigns have been completed (check by VIN).

Running costs

Typical fuel consumption is 5.1–8.3 L/100 km depending on engine and driving style; diesels are the most economical for higher-mileage use. Maintenance costs are moderate for the class. Post-2018 examples are more modern in emissions terms; earlier diesels may face restrictions depending on local low-emission zone rules.

Fuel consumption

  • Diesel (2.0 dCi): ~5.1–6.5 L/100 km, most economical for high-mileage use.

Maintenance

Moderate for the class. Independent specialists keep bills reasonable; the diesels are well supported.

Road tax and registration (Belgium)

Varies by region, power and CO₂. Lower-powered versions are cheapest.

Insurance

Generally moderate.

LEZ / low-emission zones

Post-2018 examples are more modern in emissions terms. Earlier diesels may face restrictions depending on local low-emission zone rules.

Market position

The Koleos is a less common mid-size SUV in the Belgian used market compared with the Kadjar or Austral. The 2.0 dCi dominates listings. It competes with the Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008 and Skoda Kodiaq of the same era. Clean, low-mileage cars with full history remain easy to sell. Higher-mileage 4x4 or poorly maintained CVT examples carry more risk. The practical cabin and refined ride help residual values relative to more style-focused rivals.

Summary

The Koleos is a large, comfortable SUV based on the Nissan X-Trail, with a relaxed ride and a roomy rear seat. The 1.3 TCe and the diesels (1.6/2.0 dCi) are regarded as reliable; the CVT on petrol models needs regular servicing. Check the CVT, the suspension and the infotainment.
