Production and platform

Produced from late 2018 onward. Third generation of the B-Class. Compact MPV / multi-purpose hatchback based on the MFA2 platform (related to the A-Class W177, CLA C118, and GLA H247). Front-wheel drive standard; 4MATIC all-wheel drive available on most versions. Facelift introduced in 2022. Related models include the plug-in hybrid B 250 e. Primary assembly in Rastatt, Germany. Production of combustion versions expected to wind down around 2026 without a direct successor in the same form.

Driving experience

Comfortable, quiet and far more modern than the W246. The W247 rides with better isolation, steers lightly and accurately, and keeps its high seating position without the body roll of the old car. The M282/M260 petrols are smooth and eager, the OM654 diesel is the long-distance pick, and the 250 e plug-in covers short trips on electric power. The dual-clutch is smoother than before. It is a more grown-up, better-built family car than the W246, with MBUX tech and a cabin that finally feels like a proper Mercedes.

Dimensions and practicality

Length approximately 4,419 mm. Width around 1,796 mm. Height around 1,562–1,567 mm. Wheelbase 2,729 mm. Boot volume approximately 445–455 litres (seats up on most versions), expanding to roughly 1,530–1,540 litres with seats folded. Plug-in hybrid versions slightly reduced. Fuel tank capacity typically 43 litres. Compared with the previous W246: slightly longer, updated styling, and improved technology. Practicality remains strong for a compact MPV, with a high seating position and usable load volume.

Facelift (2022)

Introduced in 2022 for the 2023 model year. Main changes: revised exterior styling (grille, lighting, bumpers); updated interior and MBUX software; engine refinements and more mild-hybrid options; equipment and driver-assistance updates; continued plug-in hybrid availability.

Differences from the previous generation (W246)

Updated MFA2 platform. Revised engines (M282 / M260 petrol, OM654 diesel). More advanced electronics and driver aids. Overall more refined and modern than the W246. Practicality retained with a high seating position.

Known issues and weak points

Petrol (M282 / M260)

  • M282 (1.3-litre): elevated oil consumption reported on some early examples. Carbon buildup possible on direct-injection versions at higher mileage.
  • M260 (2.0-litre): carbon buildup on intake valves possible at higher mileage. Generally more robust than early M282 units.
  • 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical issues possible on later cars.

Diesel (OM654)

  • Rocker arm and camshaft lobe wear possible on some early examples.
  • Electric coolant pump recalls on certain production periods (verify by VIN).
  • AdBlue / NOx sensor faults and DPF clogging more common on short-trip use.
  • EGR issues possible.

Transmission (7G-DCT / 8G-DCT)

  • Low-speed judder or delayed engagement possible if fluid is neglected. Fluid service recommended earlier than official intervals. Early production (2018–2020) subject to gearbox oil underfill campaign (verify by VIN). Generally durable with maintenance.
  • 4MATIC differential noise or wear reported on some higher-mileage examples (fluid changes help).

Other

  • MBUX screen freezes or software glitches (mostly resolved by updates).
  • 12-volt battery drain issues reported on some cars left standing.
  • Suspension bush and control arm wear at higher mileage.
  • Multiple recalls (coolant pump, airbags, software, gearbox oil). Always verify full VIN status.
  • Interior rattles reported on some examples.

What a buyer should check

Running costs

Indicative costs for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class W247 in normal Belgian/EU use (approximate 2026 figures). Actual figures vary by region, driving style and service location.

Fuel consumption

  • B 180 / 200 (M282 1.3): typically 5.5–7.5 L/100 km.
  • B 220 / 250 (M260 2.0): typically 6.5–9.0 L/100 km.
  • B 180 d / 200 d (OM654): typically 4.5–6.0 L/100 km — the most economical choice.
  • B 220 d (OM654 2.0): typically 5.0–6.5 L/100 km; AdBlue consumption low.
  • B 250 e PHEV: highly dependent on charging; can be very low if mostly electric, or similar to petrol if not charged.

Maintenance

Mercedes service is premium-priced. Oil service typically €150–300. Dual-clutch gearbox fluid service every ~60,000 km is recommended. Tyres and brakes add up. AdBlue consumption on the diesel is low. Independent Mercedes specialists keep bills more reasonable than dealers.

Road tax / registration (Belgium)

Highly region-dependent (Flanders more CO₂-oriented; Wallonia/Brussels influenced by power/CV and mass). The 1.3- and 2.0-litre engines sit in moderate brackets. Expect roughly €200–800+/year depending on engine, exact CO₂, region and any ongoing reforms. One-off BIV/TMC on first Belgian registration is also engine- and age-sensitive.

Insurance and LEZ

Typical group for a compact MPV. Annual premium heavily dependent on age, history, location and cover level. Full comprehensive is expensive on higher-value examples. LEZ: all engines fully Euro 6d compliant and unrestricted in Belgian/EU low-emission zones.

Belgian/EU market notes

The B-Class W247 remains a practical compact MPV in the Belgian used market, competing with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan of the same period. The B 180 d and B 200 d diesels were frequent choices for mixed private and company use due to torque, fuel economy, and high seating position. Plug-in hybrid models (B 250 e) gained traction for company-car advantages with usable electric range. Road tax and registration tax vary by region, power, and CO2. Car-Pass documentation is required for Belgian sales. Many examples show moderate company-fleet mileage with full service histories. Facelift cars (2023 onward) generally benefit from refined engines and software. Early production (2018–2020) requires closer scrutiny of specific OM654 and gearbox oil campaigns. Front-wheel-drive versions avoid the highest 4MATIC differential risks. The high seating position and usable boot volume remain practical advantages for urban and family use.

Summary

This generation offers modern technology and a high seating position for a compact MPV, provided the known cost items (OM654 AdBlue/DPF and specific recalls, DCT fluid service, early M282 oil consumption risks, and full VIN recall status) are verified. Facelift examples are generally more stable. The B 180 d / B 200 d with full service history remains a common and practical used choice in the Belgian market.
