Reliability & watch-outs
Known issues
- S tronic (DSG) mechatronics are the best-known weak point
- EA288 diesels: AdBlue/SCR needs attention with mainly short trips
- Direct-injection petrols: carbon buildup with lots of short trips
- MK1: neglected Haldex/AWD fluid services
- MK1 diesels: emissions system (DPF/EGR) with urban use
- MK2: infotainment software and 12V battery drain
- MK2 T8: ERAD and battery need monitoring
Pros
- quattro standard
- 550-litre boot (1550 litres folded)
- 40 TDI has 400 Nm
- High safety (early City Safety, 5-star Euro NCAP)
- Scandinavian design and quality interior
- Comfortable ride and strong diesels
Cons
- S tronic/tiptronic only — no manual gearbox
- S line suspension rides firmly on large wheels
- Not focused on sharp dynamics
- MK1 infotainment feels dated
- Higher running costs (premium)
Driving experience
Audi Q5
As a model line, the Q5 steers accurately with light, consistent weighting and stays quiet at speed. Quattro gives reassuring, planted traction in all conditions. The 2.0 TDI is strong and frugal, the 2.0 TFSI is smooth, and the 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid runs on electric for short trips. The S tronic shifts quickly. It is tuned for comfort over sharp handling.
Volvo XC60
As a model line, the XC60 is a comfort-focused, safe mid-size SUV. The steering is light and accurate, the suspension controls imperfections well and it stays composed on the motorway. The first generation feels slightly softer and the second firmer, yet both inspire confidence. The MK1 five-cylinder diesels deliver smooth torque and the MK2 mild-hybrids respond eagerly; the T8 plug-in hybrid is clearly quicker. Expect no sharp sportiness, but calm, predictable and secure driving.
