Reliability & watch-outs
Known issues
- DQ200 (7-speed dry DSG): mechatronics and clutch judder on lower-output versions
- EA888 (2.0 TFSI) petrols: water-pump/thermostat housing and early timing-chain tensioner
- Direct-injection petrols: carbon buildup with lots of short trips
- DQ200 DSG needs fluid service (automatic)
- Plastic water pump/thermostat on EA211
- AdBlue/DPF on diesels (short trips)
Pros
- quattro optional on the 2.0-litre engines
- Wide engine range — 1.0 TFSI up to the 300 hp S3
- Virtual Cockpit digital instruments on most trims
- Class-leading refinement and build quality
- Wide, efficient engine range
- Strong residuals and parts availability
Cons
- Rear legroom is tight for adults
- 380-litre boot is modest for a family hatch
- MIB3 software on early Mk8 (pre-facelift)
- Boot smaller than class leaders
Driving experience
Audi A3
As a model line, the A3 steers accurately with light, consistent weighting and stays quiet at motorway speeds. Front-drive versions are light and predictable; quattro adds strong traction out of corners, especially on the 2.0-litre engines. The 1.5 TFSI is the one to have, the 2.0 TDI is the sensible high-mileage pick and the S3 is genuinely quick. The S tronic shifts fast and the manual is light and precise.
