Reliability & watch-outs
Known issues
- DQ200 (7-speed DSG): mechatronics and clutch judder are the best-known weak point
- Direct-injection TFSI petrols: carbon buildup with lots of short trips
- Check cooling-system history at higher mileage
- 1.2 TCe (MK4): timing chain and oil consumption
- EDC automatic: juddery at low speed
- Electrical gremlins (battery drain, MediaNav/R-Link)
Pros
- Virtual Cockpit digital dials — rare in this class
- 1.5 TFSI uses cylinder-on-demand to shut off two cylinders on light throttle
- 40 TFSI (200 hp) hits 100 km/h in ~6.6 s
- Smooth, efficient engines (1.0 TCe and E-Tech)
- Compact, agile and affordable
- Large used supply
Cons
- Rear legroom is tight for adults
- No quattro option — front-wheel drive only
- 335-litre boot is small for the class
- Tight rear seat and boot (MK4)
- Base trims are sparsely equipped
Driving experience
Audi A1
As a model line, the A1 feels light and easy. The steering is quick and light, the car is effortless in tight city streets and body control is tidy. The ride is firm rather than plush, and you feel it on broken roads. The 1.0 TFSI is adequate, the 1.5 TFSI is the one to have and the 40 TFSI is genuinely quick. It is front-wheel drive only, which suits its urban role.
