Upgrades

• The W212 gained the 7G-Tronic (later 9G-Tronic) instead of the W211’s 5G-Tronic.
• New M274 petrol and OM651 BlueEFFICIENCY diesel engines replaced the M272/OM642.
• The W212 got the sharper, more angular design.
• The W212 is more economical than the W211.

Fixes

• The 7-speed shifts quicker than the W211’s old 5-speed.
• The newer engines are more efficient than the old ones.
• The W211’s dated design — the W212 sharpened it up.
• Lower consumption than the W211 across the board.

Engine & drivetrain

The 2.1 and 3.0 diesels are strong and thrifty, with the six-speed manual as a robust partner. Ideal for high mileage.

The W212 is roomy and comfortable, with lots of rear legroom and a big boot. The seats support well and the cabin stays quiet.

Interior & quality

The W212’s interior feels typically Mercedes: solid, comfortable and neatly finished. A premium environment that ages well.
