BMW 118i
Description
BMW 118i — demo vehicle, fully inspected and certified.
The 1 Series (F40) — BMW’s compact hatch, now roomier and easier to live with.
By switching to front-wheel drive, the F40 gained the cabin space and practicality the old 1 Series lacked, while keeping BMW’s premium feel and sharp handling.
Upgrades
- Far more rear legroom and boot space than the F20
- Bigger, better-finished interior with BMW OS 7
- More efficient engines
- Better connectivity and driver-assist tech
Fixes
- The F20’s cramped rear seats — the F40 is genuinely usable in the back
- The F20’s small boot — the F40 has a much bigger one
- The F20’s dated interior — the F40 feels modern and premium
- Lower running costs than the F20
Engine & drivetrain
The petrol range runs from the smooth, frugal 1.5-litre three-cylinder (118i) to the punchy 2.0-litre B48 four-cylinder (120i) and the hot M135i xDrive. The Steptronic automatic suits the three-cylinder’s relaxed character perfectly.
Handling
The F40 is agile and easy, with the familiar BMW quality in a compact package. Front-wheel drive brings more cabin space and lower running costs without dulling the driving experience.
- The 118i automatic is the smart everyday pick: smooth, frugal and effortless.
- The M135i xDrive is the hot one — 306 hp and all-wheel drive.
- Shares its front-drive platform with MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer.
Did you know?
- The F40 was the first front-wheel-drive 1 Series — a big change for a model known for rear-wheel drive.

A 1 Series is the premium compact hatch for every day.
