Production and platform

Third-generation Volvo S60, launched in 2018 (model year 2019). Premium sedan built on the SPA platform, shared with the V60 and XC60. Front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive on higher-output models. A facelift in 2022 updated the exterior, revised interior materials and introduced 48V mild-hybrid assistance on non-plug-in models. Production continues into the mid-2020s, with later years focusing on plug-in hybrid variants. Distinguished by its Scandinavian design, high safety ratings and a broad petrol and hybrid engine range.

Dimensions and practicality

Length approximately 4,761 mm; width around 1,850 mm (excluding mirrors); height around 1,431 mm; wheelbase 2,872 mm. Boot volume approximately 390–442 litres. Fuel tank 60 litres. Ground clearance around 142–152 mm. Rear passenger space is adequate for adults on shorter journeys; headroom is good. The cabin offers practical storage. Suited as a four-door premium sedan for mixed use. Towing capacity up to 1,800–2,000 kg (braked) depending on powertrain.

Driving experience

Composed and secure for a premium sedan of its era, with light steering that suits motorway and urban driving. The ride is comfortable on standard wheels, and body roll is present yet managed. Petrol engines deliver responsive performance across the rev range. It prioritises comfort and safety over sharp dynamics, with good visibility.

Transmissions and drive

The S60 III uses an 8-speed Geartronic automatic on all engines. Front-wheel drive is standard on T4/B4; all-wheel drive is standard on T6/B6 and the plug-in hybrids, and optional on T5/B5. The T6 Recharge/T8 pairs a combustion engine with a rear-axle electric motor (ERAD).

Common issues

  • T6/T8 petrol: oil consumption on early examples; ERAD rear electric drive unit wear on pre-2022 T8 models; high-voltage battery range degradation on some T8 examples; supercharger seal wear on high-mileage T6 units.
  • Sensus infotainment: freezes and software glitches on many examples.
  • Optional air suspension: compressor and bellows wear at higher mileage.
  • Timing belt: interval typically 150,000 km or 10 years (interference engine).
  • Brake rotors: uneven wear and judder reported on some examples.

What a buyer should check

  • Full service history, including regular oil changes, timing-belt replacement and any hybrid system services.
  • Cold-start engine behaviour and any power loss or warning lights.
  • Transmission behaviour from cold and under load.
  • All-wheel-drive system function and any dashboard warnings.
  • Infotainment system operation and any software update history.
  • Confirmation that any software or technical campaigns have been completed (check by VIN).

Running costs

Indicative costs for normal Belgian/EU use (approximate 2026 figures). Actual figures vary by region, driving style and service location.

Fuel consumption

Typically 6.5–9.0 L/100 km depending on engine and driving style. Hybrids are the most economical for mixed use.

Maintenance

Moderate for the class; independent specialists keep bills reasonable. Budget for timing-belt replacement and hybrid system services.

Road tax / registration (Belgium)

Belgian road tax varies by region, power and CO₂.

Insurance

Generally moderate.

Market position

The third-generation S60 is a common premium sedan on the Belgian used market, where the T5 and T6 petrols dominate listings. It competes with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 of the same era. Clean, low-mileage cars with full history remain easy to sell. Higher-mileage examples with neglected hybrid systems carry more risk. Its strong safety reputation and practical cabin help residuals relative to more style-focused rivals.

Summary

This generation is a practical premium sedan of its era. The T5 petrol and well-serviced later examples are generally reliable when maintained correctly; the main risks are ERAD and battery issues on early T8 hybrids, oil consumption on early T6 units, and Sensus software problems. Full service history is essential. Ownership costs stay moderate for the class.
